Symbols in To Kill A Mockingbird:
I think Miss Maudie's nut grass symbolizes rumors going fast that can turn bad.
Quote- "Why, one sprig of nut grass can ruin a whole yard. Look here. When it comes fall this dries up and the wind blows it all over Macomb County!" (Lee, 42) It impacts the novel because, rumors are spread all over town of Boo, Tom Robinson, and Atticus.

I think the Mockingbird symbolizes innocence. It symbolizes Tom Robinson. It keeps the plot of the trial moving.
Quote- "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (Lee, 90)

I think the rabid dog symbolizes the madness in Maycomb over the trial. and also Atticus's courage. The madness in Maycomb would be the case of Tom Robinson, how they think it's wrong of him defending Tom. Atticus's courage is to show what skills he has and how he takes one shot and can do it.
Quote- "This is Cal. I swear to God there's a mad dog down the street a piece- Mr. Finch, I declare he is-old Tim Johnson, yes sir . . . yessir . . . yes-" (Lee, 93)

I think the knothole symbolizes friendship because, Boo wants to be friends with Jem and Scout and he uses the knothole to communicate.
Quote- "Boo was our neighbor. He gave us two soap dolls, a broken watch and chain, a pair of good-luck pennies, and our lives. But neighbors give in return." (To Kill A Mockingbird, 278).
